The latest cybercriminal scam to grab your secret data or download malware.
The new Captcha scam works by luring unsuspecting people to an unsecure compromised website by phishing or fictitious advertising, then being requested to verify they are a human by completing a Captcha.
By clicking the Captcha a script of commands is secretly pasted into the clipboard on your computer, the Captcha then asks the user to open the computer Run window, paste the script from the clipboard and run the script.
The script then downloads the malware - and just like that your device is either infected or your private data downloaded!
Some Stay Safe Steps:
- It sounds obvious but avoid suspicious websites and clicking on links from dubious looking emails or online adverts.
- If the Captcha asks you to do a simple task that a bot could easily mimic - avoid!
- Your computer's run function is really only used by programmers and the like so it's best left alone by us mere mortals, so if you are asked to run a script decline!
- If you are caught off guard and paste a script that you are unsure about, delete it and run your antivirus software asap to be safe.
